Selmer's Pet Land

It is no wonder this pet store is the best on Long Island - if not all of NY. The store opened in 1939 and continues to be operated by the Selmer Family. You get that warm fuzzy feeling the moment you walk through the door. With knowledgeable staff available to answer any questions - it is a pleasure to shop there. I do not know how they have such competitive prices when every other store (especially chains like Petco and Petsmart) do not size up. I would pay more shopping in such a CLEAN and well stocked pet store... Shhh don't tell the owner :-)

This store is one of my all time favorites... The BRAND NEW salt water/reef section is incredible. They have a very large selection of fresh water fish as well. Seasonal items such as ponds, outdoor plants and pool fish are priced right for the unique and quality selection. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to assist with any problem you may have. On one visit the owner himself spent over an hour with me and did not even pressure me to make a purchase - like so many other retailers. They are truly there to help... No wonder they have been in business for over 50 years! If you are looking for an old time family owned 'pet shop' this place a must visit
