Quaint little store, well off the main drag. Nice atmosphere, well kept and clean. Unfortunately because the store is so small, has a VERY limited selection of fish; though what they have is nice and healthy looking. Staff is curteous and polite, though not sure how knowledgable. Reasonable prices, nice selection of drygoods for so small a store. Probably well suited for beginners, but intermediate and advanced fishkeepers will be disappointed.

I have had great success with this pet store. They know fish, unlike the big pet store chains like Petco and Petsmart.

At Appalachian Tails, each kinds of fish has it's own tank with its own filter so if one tank is sick, the disease is only in that tank, whereas the bigger chains have a single filtration system so diseased water get put into every tank. When I walk by the tanks at Appalachian Tails, their fish are healthy, with intact fins and they and are active, not lethargic. I have yet to see a dead fish in a tank (knock on wood).

The staff are extremely friendly and will work with you whatever your needs may be. I wanted to set up a 20 gal tank, but they didn't have all the parts there to make one, but they did have a 20 gal startup set. I didn't want to get it because I wanted to get a different filter than what came in the box. So one of the staff opened the box, took out the filter and put in the kind of filter I wanted and charged me the difference, which was around $5.

The staff know about fish and told me many tips to make my fish happier, such as to use driftwood with Otocinclus because driftwood has little cracks and algae gets into those and Otocinclus love to suck it out!

I highly recommend this pet store for your fish needs. You won't be disappointed!
