Actually Petco doesn't even deserve half a fish.

Once all the male bettas have been picked over their tiny cups have been horribly neglected. By this time the fish are suffering from a combination of either severe fin rot or fin rot that's reached the body, Columnaris and amonia poisoning.

Their pufferfish are pitiful. For three straight weeks that I've gone in their dogface pufferfish has been sitting on top of the filter, slowly dying.

There are always dead fish in the tanks if not decaying ones.

The staff knows absolutely nothing about aquariums - fresh, salt or brackish.

Petco is the worst place for a beginning aquarist to buy stock.

The only thing I'll give credit to Petco for is cheap 1 gallon tanks.

This is Gouramigirl (who works at another Petco) just wanting to reveal some facts about that> The stickers actually read "Fish are under observation, etc" and they are placed on a tank which is literally under observation. Receiving a shipment of fish is always a stressful situation for them. And under stress, their immune system is lower, and they are more susceptible to illness and injury. If we notice something going on with ONE fish, we quarantine the WHOLE tank to protect the customers from buying any seemingly healthy fish that might be carrying something. The quarantined tank can also be under medication. The sticker is also a signal to other Petco employees to check the tank EVERY HOUR for improvement or detriment. It is a signal to other employees NOT TO SELL these fish so as NOT TO STRESS THEM OUT with netting.
I see Petco as the perfect place for beginning aquarists because we carry mostly kid-friendly and easy to care for fish.
I DO believe in supporting privately owned Fish businesses and my manager supports the fact that I will and do recommend them often to more experienced fish people, or for harder to find goods and species. Being in a big store with a few more employees, we have the time to take a beginner by the hand and show them specifically what they need to start an aquarium, how the equipment works, show them the setup, etc. and keep few people waiting.
I encourage you to check out other Petco's and talk to their Aquatics Department.

Petco has many fish. But something worries me about the dead ones floating on the top of just about all tanks. Petco is not animal friendly, it is animal exploity. The fish arent healthy. Petco actully produces stickers that say something like " We sorry, We're on Quarintine" with a little petco logo on it. I've seen these on multiple tanks before. This leads me to believe that it is quite common for whole tanks of thier fishes to be diseased. Sucks for Petco, but their the ones that keep going back to the same deficient breeders and hence supporting this cruelty so they can spend a few less bucks per batch.
Petco has lots of supplies for fish, rocks, water agents, etc. but why shop petco when you can support a Ma & Pap fish buisness?
