Way too many sick fish!
Petco occasionally has some nice african cichlids, but quarantine is a must.
Knowledge of workers varies widely, some are ok, some are not.
Good selection of equipment and food but the prices are not so good.

I often wonder what percentage of fish they order die before being sold, I'll bet it's over 50% for the less hardy community species.

I can't even walk by the tanks in Petco. Their fish are over-crowded, even for a fish store, and the overwhelming majority of fish are infested with any combination of ich, dropsy, fin rot, etc. Each two columns of fish tanks are filtered with a central filter so if one tank in that set is diseased, it is only a short time before the rest of the fish come down with it. The employees are mostly very poorly informed and I have been told that if I "didn't keep high enough levels of ammonia and nitrite in my tank, my fish would die". It is complete misinformation.
Their fish are cheap, yes, and they have the widest selection of fresh and salt water, but it isn't worth it to purchase a fish that is already so ill that it will not only likely die but infect everything else already in your tank. Stick to the locally owned stores. If they don't have a particular fish you are looking for, it can always be special ordered.
