![]() The old man was very helpful. The older lady in the store was not very helpful/friendly at all. The last time I was in Davis (1/15/08) the place was closed down. I don't mean that I missed their open hours...they were out of business. Alex 13:02:36 3/11/2008 |
![]() An older couple runs this store. The lady is less than friendly usually, but the man is always helpful and nice, so don't be turned off to the store if the lady is the one who helps you, just try to come in when the man is working. They have lots of live plants and they can help you with them in terms of whether they will live and grow in your tank or if they are going to die after a few months. He threw in some free plant cuttings last time I was in there after he told me the plant I was looking at wouldn't root in my tank. They have some salt water selection, its limited in numbers of each species, but its a fairly large selection in terms of numbers of different species, they just usually only have a few of each. They also have the normal selection of fish that you will see, and are especially good for guppies. They have tons of guppies sold as a trio for 4.99. Not a good place to buy females compared to petco in terms of price, but the males are cheaper than petco, and the females are almost always pregnant and large and healthy. Also have some other random creatures, like I bought a salamander the last time I was there. so in summary, good store. Prices are competitive to anywhere else in davis with a very few exceptions. And the staff is way more knowledgeable than any other place in davis (I haven't been to the place on mace, but I heard it sucks). The lady may be unfriendly, but the man is very helpful and friendly. Josh Rau 18:37:35 2/19/2005 |
![]() Yes, the lady can be less than friendly, but she's not that bad once you get used to her style. I think 25 years dealing with customers of all kinds can bring a certain amount of cynicism, and she's that way with white people too, I assure you. The man makes up for it, he is friendly and knowledgable and takes time to answer all your questions. Good selection and great prices. Their prices often beat Davis Lumber's and are much lower than stores outside Davis. Fish are generally healthy and well kept, very good plant selection. no name 11:36:32 2/19/2005 |
![]() this store sucks. i prefer going to ACE's since they have a pet/hardware store. the old lady w/ glasses that works there is not friendly at all. im from the bay area and i guess since Davis only has a couple of pet stores, this is considered a decent store. but in my opinion, it is poorly cleaned and the fish tanks are not well-maintained. if this store wants a better rating, be nice to your non-white customers. non white 11:44:07 1/15/2005 |
![]() I have to disagree with the prior review about ich appearing every couple of months. I am in this store at least two times per week, and I have only spotted ich on one occasion (it was on a clown loach, and the tank was being treated and marked "not for sale"). Fish are hand selected from the distributor by the owner and always very healthy. I absolutely trust all of the fish that I get here, and Ron and Peggy will happily special order any dry goods or fish that you want. Prices are also very reasonable for the fish, somewhat high on tanks and supplies. no name 13:24:04 9/10/2004 |
![]() Very good live plant selection. Carries limited salt water selection, a few brackish tanks, as well as a variety of freshwater fish. Many of the swordtails, platys, and guppys are locally bred as well as a few of the cichlids (Blue eye and angels). Owner is willing to trade larger fish that have outgrown their tank for smaller fish as long as he is given notice. This is also the only store in town that I am aware of which sells live tubifex worms and live brine shrimp. Be aware, ich appears every couple months at this store. Mid-priced, cheaper than Animal Kingdom but more expensive than Ace Hardware. Ace Hardware has consistently healthier fish but much less selection. Emily 09:30:07 8/04/2004 |
